Rake vs. Pitch: What's the Difference?
These two terms get mixed up constantly, even among experienced boaters, because both are angles measured on the same blade. But they control very different things.
Pitch: how far the boat moves per rotation
Pitch is the theoretical distance a propeller would move forward in one full rotation if it were moving through a solid — like a screw turning through wood. It's usually expressed in inches (for example, a "19-pitch" prop).
- Higher pitch generally means higher top speed, but requires more engine power to turn and can lug the engine below its optimal RPM range.
- Lower pitch generally means better acceleration and hole-shot, but can let the engine over-rev at top end.
Pitch is the main dial for balancing acceleration against top speed, and it's why matching pitch to your engine's power curve and typical load is one of the most impactful tuning decisions you can make.
Rake: the blade's tilt relative to the hub
Rake describes how far the blades tilt forward or backward relative to a line perpendicular to the propeller's hub. A prop with more rake has blades that angle further back (aft) toward the direction of travel.
Rake affects how the boat rides, not just how it moves through water:
- More rake tends to lift the bow, which can help boats that need more lift at speed, or that run bow-heavy.
- Less rake keeps more blade surface engaged and can improve grip and handling, especially in a turn.
Why the distinction matters
Because both specs are measured as angles on the same blade, it's easy to assume adjusting one will fix a problem that's actually caused by the other. A boat that won't get on plane smoothly might need a pitch change — or it might need more rake to help lift the bow. Diagnosing which one is the actual issue is where experience matters.
Getting both right for your boat
Rake and pitch work together, along with cup, diameter, and blade count, to determine how a propeller performs on a specific hull and engine combination. There's rarely a single "correct" spec — it depends on your boat's weight, hull design, typical load, and what you're optimizing for (top speed, fuel economy, hole-shot, or ride quality).
